Figuring out which heating solution your home needs can be confusing. We hope to make the process easier for you by answering some of the most common questions about heating systems.

What is a heat pump?

A heat pump works similarly to a refrigerator. It uses refrigerant to extract heat from the outside air and transfer that heat into your home. In cooling mode it reverses the process, extracting heat from the air inside and cooling the air in your home. Heat pumps work with a ducted furnace system

What is a mini-split/ductless heat pump?

A mini-split or ductless heat pump is designed to work without a duct system. There is an outdoor unit, and each area of the home requiring heating or cooling has a seperate indoor wall unit. The indoor units are connected to the outdoor unit with copper refridgerant tubing.

How cold does it have to get before a heat pump stops working?

A heat pump continues to work even in very cold weather, but it does lose efficiency as the temperature drops. Some newer models are 100% efficient to -15 degrees Celcius.

Why does the quality of the installation matter?

Your heating and cooling system is not the same as a household appliance that just gets plugged in. The quality of the installation design and sizing greatly affects how well the system works and your comfort level. If the system is not sized correctly, or ducting is not altered and increased enough for proper airflow, then the efficiency of the equipment is not fully realized and noise levels can increase. Today's systems are designed to provide maximum comfort with minimal energy, but proper installation is essential.
